Amber is a warm, sweet, resinous accord — not a single ingredient but a perfumer's blend, traditionally built from labdanum, benzoin and vanilla. It smells golden and enveloping: powdery, slightly honeyed, a little smoky, with the cozy warmth that makes "amber" the default note of cold-weather and evening fragrances. If a scent feels like a warm blanket, amber is usually doing the work.

One common confusion worth clearing up: amber is not ambergris, and neither is ambroxan. Amber is the sweet resinous accord described above. Ambergris is a salty, marine, animalic material originally from whales. Ambroxan is a synthetic molecule (derived from clary sage) that smells dry, woody, ambery and intensely diffusive — it is the powerhouse behind modern "ambery" blockbusters and is a different beast from classic sweet amber.
