What musk smells like

Musk is the most quietly important note in perfumery — it appears in more fragrances than almost anything else, yet most people can't describe it, because it works underneath everything else. Originally an animal material, musk today is entirely synthetic, and it spans a huge range: from clean, soapy "white musk" that smells like fresh laundry and warm skin, to deep, animalic, almost sweaty musks that add sensual weight to a base.

Musk's main job is as a base note and fixative. It smooths the rough edges of a composition, makes it cling to skin, and creates that intimate "skin scent" effect — the impression that a fragrance is part of you rather than sitting on top.
