What oud smells like

Oud — also called agarwood — is the most expensive raw material in mainstream perfumery, and the most polarizing. It is the dark, resinous wood produced when an Aquilaria tree is infected by a particular mold; the tree's defensive response saturates the heartwood with fragrant resin. Real oud is animalic, smoky, leathery and medicinal, with a barnyard funk in its rawest form that Western noses often find shocking on first contact.

Almost no affordable fragrance — and very few expensive ones — uses real oud. What you are smelling is a synthetic oud accord: a blend of woody-ambery molecules, smoke and leather notes engineered to evoke agarwood without the four-figure-per-kilo price. This is the key fact for dupe buyers, because it means the "oud" in a $300 Western niche fragrance and the "oud" in a $30 Middle Eastern bottle are often closer than the price gap suggests.

Oud in dupes — a category built for cloning

Oud is a Middle Eastern signature, and the houses that dominate the dupe market — Lattafa, Armaf, Afnan, Maison Alhambra — have decades of expertise with oud accords specifically. This is the one note category where the budget houses sometimes match or beat designer-niche originals on their home turf. The honest caveat: oud is a complex, layered accord, so it is harder to clone than a simple sweet vanilla. Expect the best oud dupes to land at accuracy 7–8 rather than 9. The cheaper versions tend to simplify the accord — keeping the smoky-woody body but losing some of the leathery, animalic complexity of the original.

What to look for in an oud dupe

• "Oud" is a spectrum. Some oud fragrances are clean and rosy (rose-oud), some are sweet and ambery, some are dark, smoky and almost medicinal. Match the *style*, not just the word "oud" on the label.
• Rose-oud clones well. The pairing of rose and oud is extremely popular and reproduces accurately on a budget — one of the safest oud-dupe bets.
• Longevity should be strong. Oud accords are built on heavy woody-amber molecules that last. Good oud dupes wear for the better part of a day.
• Don't expect real agarwood. If a $30 bottle claims "pure oud," it is a synthetic accord — which is fine, because so is most of the expensive competition.
